Schmidt Memorial

The KAJ Schmidt Memorial, one piece of architecture on the beach, is one of the city’s landmarks located at Elliots Beach but is now in a derelict state.

The memorial bears a plaque that dates it back to December 30, 1930.. was built to commemorate the gallantry of Schmidt, an European sailor, who had drowned near the spot trying to save the lives of 6 other people.

Broken bridge

A kilometre and half away from Besant Nagar beach, Broken bridge is a famous film shooting spot during day-time. Its just a bridge that extends into the middle of the backwaters and ends abruptly.

The bridge was built to facilitate the movement of fishermen from Santhome beach to Elliot's beach over the mouth of the Adyar river. The bridge spans across the Adyar estuary bordering the backend of the Theosophical Society. The bridge partly collapsed after due to strong currents of the river during a particular monsoon, and has never been repaired.

In 1640, the first offical residence of the Governor of Madras was built in Fort St.Geroge. In the Government Estate on Mount Road(current Secretariat) the Government House was made into the offical residence by Governor Thomas Munro in 1820's

Ripon Building

Ripon Building - Known for its architectural splendour, which was built between 1909 and 1913. A mix of Gothic, Ionic, Neo-classical and Corinthian architectural styles, it was built by Loganatha Mudaliar at a cost of Rs 7.5 lakh. In 1913, the municipal corporation of Madras started functioning from the premises.

Napier bridge

The Napier bridge is named after Baron Napier of Magdala, who was Governor of Madras Presidency, built the iron bridge across River Cooum in 1869. A new bridge was built in 1999 with a 10.5meters wide carriageway on the western side. The eastern side carriageway is 9.75 metre in width.

Napier bridge, one of the city's oldest bridges, is all set for a stunning makeover once the sun goes down .

Looked at from a distance, it will appear as if the bridge is floating on the water. This effect is being created with special lights beneath the bridge.

Vivekanandar Illam – earlier known as Castle Kernan and Ice house before that, which is located in the right opposite to Marina on Kamarajar Salai.The Ice house – built in 1842 by Frederic Tudor who founded Tudor Ice Company, Massachusetts, US was actually a tower like structure built to store ice that is imported from US by the Tudor Ice Company.
